Foucault coins the concept of "governmentality" as a "guideline" for the analysis he offers by way of historical reconstructions embracing a period starting from Ancient Greece through to modern neo-liberalism (Foucault 1997b, p. 67).
Foucault, Biopolitics, and Governmentality Abstract. This chapter addresses the work of Michel Foucault and the theory of governmentality. The chapter commences with a discussion of the underlying assumptions of a Foucaultian approach to social theory, focusing upon the role of discourse and the relationship between knowledge and power. Foucault's work has had a profound impact on the medical humanities over the last decade or so. However, most work to date has focused on Foucault's earlier writings rather than his later contributions on the self and governmentality.
