The case we want to test this hypothesis on is the Aarne-Thompson-Uther Tale Type Catalog (ATU), a classification and bibliography of international folk tales (Uther, 2004). In the ATU, tale types are defined as canonical motif sequences such that motif string A constitutes Type X, string B stands for Type Y, etc. analysed the descriptions of the 382 animal folktales listed in a worldwide tale type index (Aarne-Thompson-Uther type index) using natural language processing (NLP) and descrip- tive statistics. 2. The Aarne-Thompson-Uther index of folk tale types gives “Beauty and the Beast” narratives their own entry (ATU Tale Type 425C) as a variant of Tale Type 425, “The Search for the Lost Husband.” Virginia E. Swain points out, however, that “in a reversal of the more frequent pattern,” the oral tradi - Abstract: The Aarne-Thompson-Uther index contains rich data on the tale rep - ertoire of the main areas of Eurasia and North Africa, but it is still Eurocentric, and does not reflect many widespread tale-types that are not registered in Europe or rarely found across the region.
