Column graph of differing latencies (in milliseconds) of the left vagus nerve, right vagus nerve, recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), and external branch of superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN). In ipsilateral comparisons, the mean right vagal latency of 5.47 ms (±0.73) compared to the mean right RLN latency of 3.73 ms (±0.44) showed statistical significance ( P < .0001).

In cases in which the subclavian artery arises dorsally either between the esophagus and trachea (arteria lusoria) or retroesophageal, the right "recurrent" laryngeal nerve branches passes directly downward and medially from the vagus nerve to the larynx. In these cases there are no recurrent laryngeal nerves.

Laryngeus recurrens branch of

The right recurrent laryngeal nerve branches off from the vagus in front of the subclavian artery. It winds inferiorly around this artery, then posterior to the vessel, and ascends obliquely posterior to the common carotid artery to supply the larynx (Fig. 22.5). The superior laryngeal nerve is a branch of the vagus nerve. It arises from the middle of the inferior ganglion of vagus nerve and in its course receives a branch from the superior cervical ganglion of the sympathetic nervous system.

They then pass behind the posterior, middle part of the outer lobes of the thyroid gland and enter the larynx underneath the inferior constrictor muscle, passing into the larynx just posterior to the cricothyroid joint.

However, the anatomical structures of the region, mainly the relationship of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and inferior thyroid artery (ITA) makes the procedure challenging.

The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), also known as the inferior laryngeal nerve, is a branch of the vagus nerve (CN X) which has a characteristic loop around the right subclavian artery on the right and the aortic arch on the left before returning up to achieve the tracheoesophageal groove and then the larynx .
